FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(WASHINGTON, DC): Today, When We All Vote, a leading nonpartisan voting organization committed to increasing participation in every election launched by Michelle Obama in 2020, released a statement following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Moore v. Harper.

“Today, the Supreme Court decided to protect our democracy. The Moore v. Harper decision rejects attempts to upend our elections and give state lawmakers nearly unchecked power to attack voting rights that would no doubt disproportionately impact Black, Brown and young voters. The Court affirmed what the vast majority of election law experts, constitutional scholars and voting rights advocates have known all along — the ‘independent state legislature theory’ is a fringe concept pushed by extremist legislators that could put more power in the hands of extreme partisan legislators and uproot our fundamental system of checks and balances.”

“While we are relieved by this win for democracy in North Carolina and nationwide, we also know that state lawmakers have introduced nearly 400 bills that restrict voter access and election administration. The fight continues, and When We All Vote will continue to play our part to ensure every American can make their voices heard in our elections.”

ABOUT When We All Vote:

When We All Vote is a leading national, nonpartisan initiative on a mission to change the culture around voting and to increase participation in each and every election by helping to close the race and age gap. Created by Michelle Obama, When We All Vote brings together individuals, institutions, brands, and organizations to register new voters across the country and advance civic education for the entire family and voters of every age to build an informed and engaged electorate for today and generations to come. The initiative also led in voter education, registration, and volunteer engagement and as a result, 512,000 people started or completed the voter registration process, and nearly 500 media, corporate, and nonprofit partners joined its efforts.
